What does it take to learn to dive?If you have the desire and meet basic requirements you can easily learn to dive. Children as young as twelve and seniors well into their seventies, who are comfortable and relaxed in the water, can learn to scuba dive. The only specific requirements are to be able to swim 200 yards (no time limit, any stroke) and to be able to tread water or float in water too deep to stand for ten minutes. |
What is involved to get certified?The Open Water Scuba Diver course is an entry-level certification course designed to give you the necessary skills to safely conduct open water dives. Some of the many skills you will learn include: Buoyancy, Proper weighting, Marine conservation, Equipment assembly, Proper dive planning, Equipment maintenance. The course covers all the basic knowledge about equipment, physiology and the marine environment while training students to perform basic skills underwater. This course is the key to start exploring dive destinations around the globe or just in your backyard. The course consists of self study, academic review with an instructor and in-water skill development sessions at the pool, followed by two days of open-water training dives. |
Who is NAUI?NAUI was founded by Albert Tillman and Neal Hess in 1959. In August 1960, NAUI's first Instructor Certification Course was conducted at the Houston Shamrock Hilton Hotel with 72 condidates. A little over a year later, in October 1961, NAUI was incorporated in the State of California as a non-profit educational organization. Al Tillman was the first President and Neal Hess the Executive Secretary. Other original board members inculded John C. Jones of the Red Cross and Gary Howland of the United States Air Force. NAUI Worldwide is an international not-for-profit membership training agency organized solely to support and promote dive safety through education. Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau was on the board of advisors of NAUI, as was Albert R. Behnke, a pioneer of diving medicine. Lloyd Bridges, who as character "Mike Nelson" on the TV series Sea Hunt popularized scuba diving on a mass basis in America was the first honorary NAUI instructor member. Buster Crabbe, the famous Olympic swimmer and movie star was a NAUI instructor. Other celebrities who are certified NAUI divers include Kevin Costner, Lou Gossett Jr., and Cameron Diaz. Tiger Woods is a NAUI Divermaster. Most top universities, colleges, institutes of technology and the US Military certify their students through NAUI, including the US Navy, Navy Seals, Army Special Forces and NASA astronauts. |
Who is SDI?SDI (Scuba Diving International) grew out of the success of their sister company TDI (Technical Diving International), which specializes in more advanced disciplines of dive training. Both students and instructors have embraced the no nonsense approach that the SDI training system offers. We have streamlined the course materials to let students study the essential academics with an emphasis on practical diving skills learned in both the pool and open water environments. SDI is the ONLY agency to require students to be taught with modern dive computers from the onset of training. SDI course materials are state-of-the-art; the materials are lavishly illustrated with photography and graphics. Diving is constantly changing. The SDI staff is always looking forward and striving to be the innovators in scuba diving education. SDI's focus is to make an experience of diving that is enjoyed by every family member. |

There are a few personal equipment items, however, whose selection is critical to your comfort, safety and enjoyment.
